A whale diving into the waves of the sky: Ukrainian polar explorers record an amazing phenomenon. Photo
Ukrainian polar explorers from the Antarctic research station Akademik Vernadsky recorded an interesting phenomenon. Near King George Island, scientists saw an interesting cloud.
According to the researchers, the cloud resembles the figure of a whale diving into the sky waves. This miracle was photographed by our polar explorers from the "Noosphere" ship and posted on their Facebook page.
Anatolii Andrieiev, the head of the technical team of the seasonal expedition, captured the wonderful moment in the photo.
"In the background of the photo, you can see oval lentil-like clouds and their fragments – they indicate a stable state (stable stratification) of the atmosphere at the level of their formation. Below, several grayer cumulonimbus clouds are visible, which demonstrate an unstable layer of the atmosphere from below," Vernadsky scientists describe in the post.
The polar explorers explain that relatively warm and humid air rose from the ocean surface, formed low clouds, and then crashed into a stable layer of the atmosphere.
"This collision most likely formed such an unusual wavy cloud," said Denys Pishniak, head of the Department of Atmospheric Physics and Geocosmos at the National Academy of Sciences.
In the post, the Ukrainian researchers call the recorded cloud a "celestial whale" and ask the readers of the page what this celestial figure reminds them of. "It looks like an alien airplane to me," one poster replied.
"And to me, it looks like a penguin who found something interesting in the snow and buried himself so deeply that his tail sticks out (on the left)," wrote another.
Another reader of Vernadsky's page said that it was a "cloud with a pen."
