Greece is the perfect country for a summer vacation. If you want to combine the active nightlife of Ibiza and the stunning architecture of Venice, travel experts recommend paying attention to the island of Mykonos.

Mykonos is an island in the Cyclades archipelago, washed by the waters of the Aegean Sea. Express told you what is unique about this area and how you can spend your vacation there.

According to legends, it was here that Heracles slayed the giants whose bodies were petrified and turned into rocks. The island was first inhabited by Egyptians, then by Creteans, who were replaced by settlers from Athens.

In 1207 the island was conquered by the Venetians, and in the first half of the 16th century the Turks came to Mykonos. The island was liberated in 1830 after the War of Independence.

Besides nightlife and partying, Mykonos offers stunning clean beaches, typical white buildings and quiet hotels. There are bars along the beaches and the clubs are open until the morning.

Overlooking the sheltered bay and harbor is the town of Mykonos, known to locals as Chora. The town is the epitome of Greek architecture with the typical combination of white and blue in the details, cozy houses and narrow winding streets dotted with colored flecks of tropical plants.

Here you will find all sorts of famous boutiques and local shopping stalls. There are also numerous small churches - there are over 1200 of them on the island alone, mostly open to tourists and decorated with dozens of icons and statues.

Take a walk down to the bay and you'll find yourself in the gorgeous Little Venice neighborhood.

Just south of it is one of the island's most famous landmarks, a row of seven tall windmills dating back to the 16th century. They were built by the Venetians and were used for their intended purpose for a long time, and are now the perfect backdrop for photographs, especially at sunset.

The island of Delos, the mythological birthplace of the twin Olympian gods Apollo and Artemis, can be seen on the horizon.

You should also visit the archaeological museum, ethnographic museum, the Aegean maritime museum and the Monastery of the Virgin Mary.
