The U.S. national ice hockey team suffered a sensational defeat against Slovakia at the 2024 World Championship, which is currently taking place in the Czech Republic. The North Americans were considered the clear favorites of the game, but the Europeans were stronger in overtime - 5:4.
The Slovaks, who were given an average odds of 5.18 to win, shocked their opponents in the first period. Already in the 12th minute, they hit the American goal twice, with the team consisting almost entirely of National Hockey League (NHL) players.
At the beginning of the second third of the game, the United States scored one goal, but almost immediately got two goals in a minute and a half. The Europeans failed in the third period, allowing their opponents to equalize and take the game into an additional five minutes of 3v3.
In the end, with 64 seconds left before the final siren, Slovakia snatched the victory thanks to a precise shot from almost the blue line by Milos Kelemen. He was assisted by his partner, who blocked the view of the American goalie.
It should be noted that in the opening game of the championship, the Slovaks sensationally lost to Germany, whom the United States defeated 6-1.
