Archaeologists in Turkey have made an extraordinary discovery. Experts have found about 2000 fragments of valuable bronze statues in an ancient landfill.

In the ancient city of Metropolis, also called the "City of the Mother," where excavations have been underway since 1990, scientists have found evidence of many civilizations, from the earliest settlements of the Late Neolithic to the Classical period, from the Hellenistic period to the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. However, the researchers did not expect to find valuable fragments of artifacts from the period of late antiquity in an area that probably served as an "ancient garbage dump," Arkeonews reports.

Professor Serdar Aybek, who is leading the excavations, said that the bronze fragments of the statues were found in the corner of the room, in a dump, where the parts were disassembled for melting.

"We have discovered approximately 2000 fragments of a bronze statue. These are extraordinary discoveries, even for our field of work," said Aybek, explaining that the finds include elements of a Hellenistic statue and figures from the Roman era.

"In late antiquity, when mythological beliefs were abandoned in favor of monotheistic religions and Christianity became dominant in the region, bronze statues from mythological and earlier eras were dismantled," Professor Serdar said.

Archaeologists speculate that a significant portion of the statues were melted down for coinage. What makes this discovery all the more surprising is that it is evidence of a recycling practice that goes back more than a millennium.

In addition to the fragmented statues, the archaeologists found square and rectangular bronze plates at the site, which were probably used to cast and repair statues. This means that in its heyday, the Metropolis could have served as a center for the creation or repair of bronze statues, the researchers suggest.
