Your orchid will love it: a revolutionary watering method that will make caring for your orchid much easier

Ice cubes are good for the orchid

The orchid is not only known for its graceful beauty, but also for its fastidiousness. It reacts instantly to the slightest changes in light, humidity or drafts.

Excess moisture is one of the most common causes of death of indoor orchids. But there's one interesting lifehack, which will greatly simplify the care of the plant. Experts advise using ice cubes. The publication Better Homes and Gardens tells us more in detail .

Ice cubes for orchids

The concept of watering orchids with ice cubes may seem absurd, as sub-zero temperatures are always stressful for plants from tropical regions. However, experts say that ice cubes will not cause serious harm if done correctly.

"It is difficult to provide a plant with the right watering regimen, and sometimes mistakes have dire consequences," said Marcel Bunkamp, director of cultivation at Just Add Ice.

Buncamp and team developed a watering method that only requires three ice cubes.

The study, which was conducted by researchers from Ohio State University and the University of Georgia, found that ice cubes are an effective and safe way to water orchids.

Two groups of orchids were compared. Some were watered with three ice cubes once a week, while others used an equivalent amount of water to water them. Both groups of orchids showed similar results.

How to water orchids with ice

Instead of regular watering, experts advise putting three ice cubes in the container with the orchid. Be sure to avoid areas with leaves or roots.

The ice will melt relatively quickly and the orchid will absorb the water. The researchers found that the temperature of the bark only dropped a few degrees while the cubes were melting, not enough to damage the roots.

Moss holds moisture longer than bark chips, so the amount of water an orchid needs can vary. It also depends on the temperature in the room and the humidity level.

So the gist of the recommendation is to initially give your orchid three ice cubes a week. Next, keep an eye on the plant to see if this is enough.

"Silvery roots need moisture, while bright green roots indicate adequate watering," Buncamp emphasized. Attention should be paid to the leaves. Under-watered plants will have wrinkled, dull green and wilted looking leaves.

Whether you can water other plants with ice

Using ice cubes is a simple and effective watering technique for most plants. However, it is not always practical, as you may need too much ice.

Just Add Ice reported that plants such as anthuriums, money trees and several types of bonsai have done well in the "ice test".
