Towels, much like mirrors, are surrounded by numerous superstitions. Regarded as important magical objects, they are considered talismans against evil spirits and symbols of fate. This significance is reflected in various cultural practices, such as standing on an embroidered towel during weddings or placing a newborn baby on one. Towels are even utilized in funeral rites, further contributing to their mystical aura. Due to their perceived importance, several taboos are associated with towels.

Why should you avoid hanging a towel on the door?
This superstition originates from the historical use of towels in funeral rites. In the past, Ukrainians would hang a towel on the door when someone in the house passed away. It served as a sign of mourning and a symbol of the soul's transition to the afterlife. Consequently, using a towel in this manner without a specific reason is considered inauspicious.
What should you do if a towel falls?
A towel falling to the floor is seen as an omen of bad news or the arrival of unwanted guests. Traditional belief holds that catching a falling towel prevents the sign from taking effect. If a towel does end up on the floor, promptly pick it up and refrain from hanging it on the door for at least a few seconds, disrupting the potential negative influence.
Why is washing the floor with a towel discouraged?
Towels, regardless of their age or condition, are considered sacred. Even repurposing old and worn towels for tasks like washing the floor is deemed inappropriate. Using a towel for such "dirty" work is believed to foreshadow health issues, family deaths, financial losses, and poverty. As an alternative, it is recommended to use mops with attachments, cleaning vacuum cleaners, specialized rags, or other items designated for floor cleaning.
