What did the first ever porn, filmed back in 1896, look like? Video.
One can argue endlessly that it is the internet that has corrupted an entire generation and made it so that watching porn has turned from a personal secret into a joke that should be told to everyone. However, the truth is different: porn in its various forms has probably always existed alongside humanity.
OBOZREVATEL tells the story of the first pornographic films made in the 19th century, almost immediately following the first ever film, which appeared in 1888.
Le Coucher de la Mariée / Sleeping Time for the Bride (1896)
Le Coucher de la Mariée is considered the oldest existing pornographic film in the world. The film was directed by Albert Kirschner and starred French actress Louise Willy.
In the film, a couple of newlyweds are preparing to go to bed on their wedding night. While the man sits behind a screen, the woman performs a kind of striptease. The original film lasted about 7 minutes, but now only a short excerpt can be found.
Despite the fact that Le Coucher de la Mariée is called the first pornographic film, it could be shown even to children today, as the maximum amount of nudity shown in the film is the ankles.
However, it was certainly a very outrageous film by the standards of the late 19th century.
The Kiss (1896)
Like the previous film, no one in their right mind would call The Kiss a pornographic film nowadays, but at the time it was very risky and obscene.
As the title suggests, the film depicted a kiss between actors May Irvine and John Rice.
Although the kiss scene was chaste, to put it mildly, it caused a wide outcry and condemnation from the Roman Catholic Church. The film was also criticised in newspapers, and its screening was accompanied by a police presence.
The Kiss is currently listed on the US National Film Registry for its cultural value.
El Sartorio (also El Satario) (1907 or 1912)
If we are talking about the first real pornographic film, which would be considered as such even by the standards of modern society, then it would be El Sartorio.
According to various sources, the film was shot in Argentina in 1907 or 1912. No information about the director or actors of this film has been preserved. It is indeed the first film to show nudity and sex with close-ups of the genitals.
The film begins with a scene of three naked women having fun in a river. When the women's fun turns to intimacy, a strange man with horns and a beard (according to various interpretations, a devil or a satyr) comes out of the woods and captures one of the women. After that, the audience is shown a scene of sex between them, which would be too explicit even for a modern audience.
