The EU almost filled its gas storage facilities

The European Union (EU) has already filled its gas storage facilities to 90.12%, which is well ahead of schedule. The EU is already ready for the next heating season, as the goal was to fill the storage facilities by 90%.

This was reported by the European Commission. "Filling gas storages before the onset of winter helps the EU to prepare for possible disruptions in gas supplies," the report says

Thus, according to the latest data from Gas Infrastructure Europe, the EU had reached its goal of filling gas storage facilities to 90% by August 18, about 2.5 months ahead of the November 1 deadline. More than 93 billion cubic meters of natural gas are in storage.

"The EU is well prepared for winter and this will help to further stabilize markets in the coming months. The EU energy market is in a much more stable position than at this time last year ... We can further strengthen our position by investing in renewables and energy efficiency," European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said.

Gas reserves in the EU in 2023

Earlier, the EU took several measures to avoid an energy crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including:

  • The Gas Demand Reduction Regulation (August-2022 ) has already stimulated an 18% reduction in gas consumption from August-2022 to May-2023 and has now been extended for another year;
  • The European Commission has led a concerted international effort on alternative gas supplies, in particular in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG);
  • The EU Energy Platform has already launched two calls for joint gas procurement and a third call will be launched in the second half of September.
  • Key investments both at the EU and on the national level have increased the EU's LNG import capacity and strengthened the resilience of the EU gas system.

According to the head of the VR Finance Committee Danylo Hetmantsev, traders are starting to use Ukrainian storage facilities as the European ones are approaching their filling point. In particular, 0.6 billion cubic meters of gas belonging to them have already been pumped.

"We, in turn, can offer our European friends and partner underground storage facilities with a total available volume of up to 15 billion cubic meters," MP from the Servant of the people party stressed.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, Ukraine itself will no longer negotiate with Russia on the extension of gas transit. According to the Minister of Energy, it will not be necessary.
