The Ukrainian Oscar Committee has selected the film that will compete for the Oscar from our country. It is the film 20 Days in Mariupol by Ukrainian journalist and photographer Mstyslav Chernov.
Together with Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko worked on the film. This is stated on the committee's Facebook page (to watch the trailer, scroll to the bottom of the page).
Five films participated in the national selection: "20 Days in Mariupol" by Mstyslav Chernov, "Iron Butterflies" by Roman Liubyi, "Pamphyr" by Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk, "Spoilheaps" by Taras Tomenko and "STTL" by Adrien Walter.
The winning film was selected by a vote of the members of the Ukrainian Oscar Committee, chaired by director Valentyn Vasyanovych.
The film tells the story of the beginning of a full-scale war - the bombing of residential buildings and a maternity hospital, constant shelling. It also shows how ordinary Mariupol residents reacted to it. Mstyslav Chernov's "20 Days in Mariupol" became the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine.
As a reminder, in 2019, Ukraine nominated Nariman Aliyev's film "Evge" for an Oscar, in 2020 - "Atlantis" by Valentyn Vasyanovych, in 2021 - "Bad Roads" by Natalia Vorozhbyt, and in 2022 - "Klondike" by Marina Er Gorbach. Since its independence, Ukraine has nominated films for the Oscars more than 10 times, but none of them have been shortlisted.
Earlier, OBOZREVATEL wrote about the scandal that erupted around the movie "Yurik" about the blockade of Mariupol.
