"Serbia did not receive this": Vucic reveals he's offended by EU's support for Ukraine

Aleksandar Vucić spoke about his country's accession process to the EU

The European Union granted Ukraine the status of a candidate for membership within a year of its application, while it took Serbia three years. In connection with this and other facts, President Aleksandar Vucić hinted that he was offended by the EU.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the politician pointed out that the level of support for Ukraine from the EU, granting it candidate status within a year and potentially starting membership negotiations"shows us [such political support] that we have never received."

In fact, Vucic accused the EU of delaying the process, as his country has been negotiating membership since 2014. They have stalled primarily because of Belgrade's reluctance to normalize relations with Kosovo.

According to the president, Serbia is in a much better position than Romania and Bulgaria were in 2007, when they joined the European Union.

"Who knows what will happen in seven years? The EU's absorption capacity is no greater than it was. You have 10 net payers [to the budget] and 17 countries that take their money. None of them would like to have more members to spend money on," Vucic said.

As you know, Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans that did not support sanctions against the Russian Federation.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported:

- Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić said that his country did not join the Crimean Platform declaration.

- At the same time, Belgrade is ready to participate in Ukraine's post-war recovery and promises to support Kyiv's European integration by sharing its experience.
