Meta has blocked access to Threads for users from the European Union: what is the reason

Users from the European Union began to complain about the inability to access the Threads app, including via VPN. Meta, the company that owns the social network, said it was blocking access to the app in the EU.

This is reported by the publication TechCrunch. Meta launched Threads last week, but given concerns about the app's privacy, it is not available in the EU.

In a statement, the company said it has taken additional measures to prevent users from accessing the new social network.

"Threads is currently unavailable in most of Europe and we have taken additional measures to prevent people there from accessing it. Europe remains an incredibly important market for Meta and we hope to make Threads available here in the future," the company explained.

TheThreads app intensively tracks users in accordance with Meta's privacy policy, which states that the app may collect a range of personal data, including highly sensitive information such as health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts and search history.

This approach poses legal and regulatory challenges for Meta in the EU.

As a reminder, last week there was unprecedented excitement in the world of social networks - the American company Meta, whose head is Mark Zuckerberg, unveiled a new social network Threads.

Zuckerberg presented Threads as a "friendly" competitor to Twitter. However, the network turned out to be not very friendly to Ukrainians. Information has already emerged that the platform is blocking accounts over Russian aggression and full-scale invasion.
