Mechanic shares what you should never do to a car
The automatic transmission is a significant improvement that has changed the driving experience for many drivers completely. However, some still use it in the wrong way, making mistakes that cause it to wear out quickly.
Auto mechanic Scotty Kilmer with over 50 years of experience behind the wheel shared top tips on his Youtube channel. Here's what not to do to your automatic so you don't break it because of your wrong actions.
Kilmer warned his readers that repairing an automatic transmission costs money. Therefore, it is important to treat this part carefully and not cause unnecessary damage.
Do not drive on roads flooded with water
If you drive on a road that is heavily flooded with water, the liquid can get inside the box through the vents. This can not only damage the transmission but completely disable it.
Do not shift into reverse while driving
This advice is especially important for those car models in which the shift lever is located between the front seats. Such shifting on the move can damage the gearbox. You will not only not get to where you planned but will also have to pay a considerable amount of money for repair.
Do not leave the engine idling for a long time
If a car with an automatic transmission will idle for a long time, it can lead to overheating of the internal part of the transmission. Therefore, it is better to turn off the engine completely if you stop for more than a couple of minutes.
Don't let the car have any wheel slips
Wheel-spinning may look cool and give a lot of fun and thrills. However, as Kilmer assures, it's one of the worst things you can do to an automatic transmission. This trick is bad for any car and can ruin this particular type of transmission irrevocably.
Do not forget to change the transmission fluid
There is an opinion that new car models do not allow you to change the transmission fluid. This is not true. If it is not updated, it will reduce the service life of the automatic transmission significantly. It may not have to be done that often, but you can't avoid the procedure altogether. Kilmer recommended changing the transmission fluid in the automatic every 100-130 thousand kilometers.
