How to grow ginger at home

Ginger is traditionally used to prevent colds. It is very useful for digestion, stimulates metabolism, and is one of the best immunostimulants, having antibacterial, tonic, and expectorant effects.

Ginger is usually imported from India and China, where the plant is grown on an industrial scale. However, it can also be grown at home. Read how to grow exotic ginger on your windowsill in the OBOZ.UA article.

Which container to choose

In fact, ginger is not easy to grow. The reason is that it takes a while to find a truly viable root. In fact, every planting is like a lottery: it will take root or not.

The root system of the plant grows horizontally. You should choose wide but flat containers. Classic flower pots are not suitable. The approximate capacity should be from 5 liters, and it is imperative to make drainage holes.

Which substrate is suitable

The substrate is simple: any universal one will do, from the usual one for indoor plants to soil for vegetable seedlings. The main conditions are that the soil should be loose and contain loosening agents, such as sand and perlite.

How to plant ginger

Soak ginger roots in warm water 24 hours before planting. You can plant either the whole root or divisions - segments from 3 to 5 cm with a peephole or a pair of peepholes in each. To avoid rotting, the slices must be air-dried or sprinkled with ash.

The bottom of the container with drainage should be covered with loose substrate, gently press the root or divisions into the soil, taking into account the position of the eye on top and the potential direction of rhizome growth. The buds should remain on the surface.

Moisturize carefully - either with a spray bottle or not too much watering. The last step is to cover the containers with foil or glass and place them in a bright and warm place.

What temperature is optimal

The plant needs a temperature of at least +18 °C and bright lighting. At +16 °C, vegetation stops, and a temperature of +12 °C is critical.

In summer, ginger should be protected from direct sun, and in winter it is better to place the container on the southern windowsill.

How to fertilize ginger

During the growing season, in spring and summer, you should fertilize ginger. Organic humus or complex mineral fertilizers will come in handy.

The plant needs high humidity, so it's a good idea to set up a tray with wet stones or moss and remember to spray it regularly every day.
