We often overlook the importance of regularly cleaning our pillows, but studies have shown that fungal spores and bacteria in dirty pillows can trigger allergic reactions, acne, or respiratory diseases.

Experts recommend washing your pillows at least every three months. The Express publication has provided tips on how to clean pillows without washing.

Key tips

Martin Seeley, CEO and expert at Mattress Next Day, emphasized that since we spend an average of a third of our lives in bed, pillows naturally become a "home" for bacteria, dead skin cells, and dust.

The expert advises washing pillows every three months. It is advisable to use a mild detergent and an extra spin cycle at the end to remove as much moisture as possible, preventing mold buildup.

Pillows made of memory foam should not be put in the washing machine. Instead, it is best to wash them by hand in a bath with a mild detergent. Buckwheat pillows should not be washed at all.

Baking soda and vinegar

To keep pillows fresh between washes, the expert recommends using vinegar or baking soda.

"The acidity of vinegar acts as an excellent dust mite neutralizer. For the best effect, you can mix vinegar with water and add a few drops of essential oil to give the pillow a pleasant scent," advised Seeley.

Vinegar also breaks down proteins in mite droppings that can act as allergens.

You can also sprinkle baking soda on the pillow and leave it for several hours. The abrasive particles will absorb sweat residue and unpleasant odors. Then vacuum the surface thoroughly.

Soap mixture

If there are small stains on the pillow, you can try spot cleaning with a mild soap. Mix a small amount of soap or detergent with water. Dampen a clean cloth or sponge with the solution and gently wipe the stained area. Then remove any remaining detergent and allow the cushion to dry completely.

How to remove dirt and dust

You can clean the pillow with a vacuum cleaner. Use an upholstery attachment and run it along both sides of the pillow, paying special attention to the seams and edges. This will help remove surface dirt.

Disinfectant spray

Change the pillowcase and place the pillow in a well-ventilated area. Apply a special fabric disinfectant spray to both sides of the pillow and let it dry. This method will eliminate unpleasant odors and refresh the pillow without washing.
