How not to violate etiquette when staying with friends or relatives: 6 rules of being a good guest

How to behave as a guest

There are situations when you have to stay overnight with relatives or friends. It's important to remember that you are a guest in someone else's home, and the rules of etiquette have not been canceled.

Even if the host has invited you to stay and said it's 'no problem,' know that it takes time and energy (and possibly money) to host someone. Lifehacker explains how to avoid breaking etiquette when staying with friends or family.

Visit without warning

Don't show up unannounced at a family or friend's house. Don't assume you can stay with them without asking first. Keep in mind that people may have other plans.

Pets

Even if someone invites you to visit, don't assume that this invitation automatically extends to your pets. If you were planning or hoping to bring a furry friend, ask the host for permission first and don't be offended if they say no.

Rules of courtesy

Be polite and kind to your hosts, even if you don't like one of their family members. This is the least you can do.

Ignoring house rules

Did the host ask you to leave your shoes at the door and wear slippers indoors? Or are there small children in the house, and you have been warned to minimize noise after 9 p.m.? Don't ignore such requests. You need to follow their house rules.

Don't act like you're staying at a hotel

When you spend the night at a friend's or relative's house, don't pretend that you are staying at a hotel. Don't expect breakfast in bed, coffee on demand, or other hotel amenities.

Criticizing or insulting your host and/or their home

Do not criticize your host or the interior of their home, even if you don't like the wallpaper in the living room or find that the mattress is not soft enough. You have the right to your opinion, but in this situation, keep it to yourself.
