Germany handed over the second Iris-T air defense system to Ukraine - Spiegel
Germany has handed Ukraine another Iris-T air defense system. Along with it, the Ukrainian army received 16 missiles.
This was reported by the SPIEGEL on Wednesday, April 19. According to the journalists, the delivery took place a few days ago.
As noted, this is the second Iris-T system that Kyiv has received from Berlin. A total of four such complexes were agreed upon.
"Germany handed over to Ukraine the second of four promised Iris-T SLM air defense systems. According to SPIEGEL, the Iris-T system and 16 guided missiles were delivered a few days ago, around April 16," the material says.
As a reminder, our Armed Forces received the first of the four promised German IRIS-T air defense systems in October 2022. During the first baptism of fire in Ukraine, this air defense system shot down 100% of the targets.
On February 14, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that two more IRIS-T SLM systems from Berlin would strengthen the protection of the Ukrainian sky. At that time, he said that their deliveries were scheduled for the next few months.
IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail) is a short- and medium-range air defense and missile defense system designed to destroy aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Such military equipment is in service in nine European countries.
It fires missiles, which cost 400 thousand euros each, with an infrared homing head.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, the day before, the German Defense Ministry reported that they had already delivered Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. The ministry did not disclose the number of systems, but noted that the air defense systems had been delivered to Ukraine together with the missiles.
