Easter is the most important Christian holiday dedicated to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its date is not fixed and varies from year to year.

OBOZREVATEL tells you when Easter is celebrated in 2023-2030 and what is the principle of determining the day of the celebration.

The history of setting the date of Easter

At the First Ecumenical Council in 325, it was decided that all churches should celebrate Easter on the same day, which does not coincide with the Jewish date, which falls on the vernal equinox.

The Patriarch of Alexandria annually calculated the date of the holiday and communicated it in advance to Rome for celebration on a single day. Later, however, this tradition ceased and the East and West began to celebrate Easter according to their own calculations.

In the 4th-6th centuries, special Easter tables were created in Alexandria (the territory of modern Egypt), which made it possible to determine the date of Easter for a long period of time. Thus, the main Christian holiday began to be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox (21 March) or coinciding with it.

Why the Catholic and Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on different days

In the 16th century, the Roman Catholic Church switched to the Gregorian calendar and began celebrating Easter according to the Gregorian Easter, while the Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar and celebrate the holiday according to the Alexandrian calendar. Therefore, Orthodox and Catholics usually celebrate Easter on different days.
