Martinez behaved defiantly after World Cup final

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has accused his teammates of provoking his scandalous behaviour after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. The Aston Villa Birmingham goalkeeper made an obscene gesture after the game, receiving the award for the best player at the World Cup, and then mocked Kylian Mbappe, the French striker.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Martinez said that he had bet with his teammates that he would put the Golden Glove 2022 World Cup to his groin. He also added that he did not even consider repeating this gesture at The Best ceremony held by FIFA, where he was named the best goalkeeper of the year.

"Of course, I'm not proud of it. It was just an argument. When everyone found out I was going to get the gold glove, the guys asked me: "Why don't you repeat what you did at the America's Cup? What if?" It's my teammates' fault. The Best is a completely different event, everyone wears suits... On the field, you are capable of many things because of the adrenaline, yes. At The Best, I had one goal - not to cry," Martinez said.

Recall that Emiliano Martinez drew a flurry of criticism for his actions on the pitch during the World Cup final, in the locker room after the match and during the celebration of winning the World Cup in Buenos Aires when he wore a doll depicting striker Kylian Mbappe. The President of the French Football Federation filed a complaint against the 30-year-old Argentine goalkeeper. And the legendary Scottish footballer Graeme Souness called the player a clown.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, legendary AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic criticised Argentine footballers who caused a real bacchanalia during the celebration of the 2022 World Cup victory.
