Another country joins the group to create a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression

The number of countries participating in the group working on the establishment of a special tribunal for Russian war crimes against Ukraine has increased to 34. Costa Rica has joined the group.

It is a Central American country bordering the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The news was shared on Twitter by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

According to him, he heard about Costa Rica's decision to join the group to create a special tribunal during a telephone conversation with the country's Foreign Minister Arnoldo Tinoco.

"Informed me that Costa Rica has decided to join the Core Group for a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine - increasing the total number of countries to 34," Kuleba wrote.

It is worth noting that before that, Austria joined the group to create a special tribunal in the case of the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Back in early March, there were 30 such countries.

It is known that at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, in May 2023, EU leaders plan to discuss with their G7 partners the creation of a special tribunal for Russia's crimes against the people of Ukraine. The EU seeks to bring the leaders of the aggressor country to justice for the military invasion and occupation that violated the UN Charter.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the US State Department supports the creation of such a special court. They call it the most effective mechanism for bringing to justice both the organisers and perpetrators of Russia's war crimes against Ukraine.
