This phrase should be replaced with an alternative version

Samantha Brown, a TV travel presenter who has been traveling the world for more than 20 years, often shares tips and tricks for tourists. This time, she talked about a phrase to avoid when traveling to countries where English is not the first language.

She shared her secret in her Instagram video. "One phrase to avoid when traveling abroad is 'do you speak English? '" Samantha said.

The host says that during her travels, she has repeatedly seen a non-verbal negative reaction to this question. She also adds that a greeting with this phrase can be perceived as a challenge or as humiliation. In any case, it spoils the communication in one way or another.

You can fix this by memorizing another phrase in the language of the country you are going to visit. "I'm sorry, I don't speak (for example) Spanish? Maybe English." "This way you show the person that you understand what country you are in, but you don't know their language, so maybe they speak yours," explains Samantha. The host believes that traveling is always about communicating with people, and the best thing to do is to be polite.

She also revealed the words you need to learn in the local language when traveling abroad, The Sun reports.

"'Hello, please and thank you' - these words will show that you are not from here because the locals recognize the accent, but you are still a kind, polite person ," the presenter explains. It took Samantha years to realize that no one on the other side expects you to speak a complete sentence.
