It turns out that the answer is in their heads: these people simply have different values and do not consider expensive things worthy of large investments.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates doesn't bother to look luxurious at all. He spends almost no money on clothes and accessories. As GQ notes, the watch that he wears over and over again is just a Casio for less than $100. Instead, Gates likes to invest in his own travels.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, hasn't changed his mind about the same pair of New Balance sneakers for several years. He replenishes his own closet with casual clothes and jeans only.

Their example shows that, apart from clothes, there are many other things that billionaires don't like to splurge on because they realize that otherwise their wealth cannot last. In particular, the natives of Silicon Valley know exactly how hard they have managed to achieve ten-digit bank accounts.

Both of the aforementioned billionaires even have certain life hacks to simplify the routine of choosing everyday clothes. For example, Gates prefers functionality and practicality, so he puts together simple outfits of shirts, pants, and jackets. In turn, Zuckerberg also has his own scheme: he buys only gray T-shirts and sweatshirts.

To explain the importance of this worldview, GQ cited an example from the movie Blank Check, in which a guy who got a fortune spent it all on his own desires instead of investing in a business that would bring in a lot of income. As a result, all his "reserves" were quickly spent as if they had never existed.

That's probably why billionaires are still billionaires: because they live a normal, harsh life, in which they know how to manage money properly.

According to GQ, an expensive shirt or dress is a nice luxury and no one forbids spending a few thousand on it, but these things will definitely not help improve your personal life or career.
