Roberto Cavalli, a favorite of fashionistas around the world, has died

On Friday, April 12, Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, the founder of the eponymous clothing brand and a favorite of fashionistas around the world, died. He was 83 years old.

This was reported by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. Citing information from its own sources, the publication reported that the fashion designer died in Florence.

The cause of death was not disclosed. According to the source, Roberto Cavalli had been ill for a long time. However, the source did not specify what exactly he was ill with.

Roberto Cavalli was accompanied by his partner, Swedish model Sandra Bergman Nilsson, with whom he had been living for the past 15 years. The designer is survived by six children:

- two from his first marriage to Silvanella Giannoni: Cristiana and Tommaso;

- three from his second marriage to the Austrian model Eva Maria Düringer: Robert, Rachele, and Daniele;

- and a son, Giorgio, from his third marriage to 37-year-old Sandra Nilsson. Giorgio was born when Cavalli was 82 years old.

Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence, Italy, on November 15, 1940, into an artistic family. His grandfather Giuseppe Rossi, s a famous artist whose works can still be seen in the Uffizi Gallery.

Cavalli studied at the famous Florence Academy of Art, where he acquired the necessary knowledge in the field of design and fine arts. While still a student, he made a number of works that were noticed by the largest knitting factories in Italy.

In the early 1970s, Cavalli invented and patented a procedure for printing on leather. Thanks to the invention, he became the king of evening leather dresses.

In his works, Cavalli focused on animal prints and bright accents.

Roberto Cavalli presented his first collection in 1972 when he opened his own store and founded the Roberto Cavalli fashion house. Interestingly, Cavalli himself preferred to be called a "fashion artist" rather than a "designer".

Roberto Cavalli is considered to be one of the most influential fashion designers of the late 20th century. Among the admirers of his design talent are such celebrities as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Victoria Beckham, Shakira, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry and many others.

The artist's fortune is estimated at about 400 million pounds. Cavalli was known as a lover of luxury living. He owned three villas, a yacht and a small helicopter.
