The first official portrait of King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark has been released online. The monarch ascended the throne on January 14, 2024, after his mother Margrethe II officially abdicated after 52 years of rule.

The picture of the couple was published on the Instagram page of the Danish royal family. The portrait depicts Their Majesties with the Order of the Elephant on chains, the country's highest national award. From now on, the photo will be displayed in government institutions, including Danish embassies and consulates around the world, and on Danish ships.

In the gala portrait, the king is wearing the ceremonial uniform of the navy. In connection with the succession to the throne, His Majesty was promoted to the rank of admiral, so the uniform was decorated with four stars. A large commander's cross can be seen around Frederick's neck.

In the picture, Mary is wearing a jeweled crown for the first time. This is an emerald set with a tiara, necklace, earrings, and a large brooch that can be divided into three parts.

A sparkling diamond miniature portrait of the King can be seen on Her Majesty's chest. For many generations, there has been a tradition that women of the royal family should wear a photo of the monarch. Thus, when Mary was crown princess, she wore a portrait of Queen Margrethe.

In January of this year, Frederik officially became King of Denmark. Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Copenhagen to say goodbye to Margrethe II and welcome the new sovereign. Interestingly, in his youth, the monarch was considered a real playboy and was even accused of treason.
