The 72-year-old star of "Black Panther" died after a medical procedure

South African actress and star of the Black Panther movie Connie Chiume died on August 6 at the age of 72. Shortly before the tragic event, the woman was hospitalized for a medical procedure.

Chiume's family announced her death on Instagram. The place where she passed away was a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"The Chioume family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of internationally acclaimed actress and award-winning actress Connie Chioume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed away at Garden City Hospital on August 6, 2024. The family requests privacy during this difficult time. The family will provide further details," the statement read.

Later, the family reported that the actress had been fighting an illness for a long time. It is not known what kind of disease. "Connie's mother died on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital after a long illness. Her children would like to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff who provided exceptional care during her hospital stay," the family said.

Connie Chiume became famous in 1989 when she starred in the South African television series Inkomo Edla Yodwa. And in two parts of the Marvel movie Black Panther, she played the role of Zawawari, a member of the Wakanda tribal council.

Moviegoers could also see Chiume in the musical Black Is King, directed by hitmaker Beyoncé and based on The Lion King. In the movie, the actress played the role of Simba's mother, Sarabi.

The Marvel and Netflix star is also known to have received several film awards: the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in the Soul City series in 2000, and 2009 marked the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress in Zone 14.
