On August 7, Ukrainian pop singer of Moldovan descent and national legend Sofia Rotaru celebrates her birthday. She is 77 years old, and for the last few years, the iconic singer has been refusing to give interviews and appear in public.

Despite her mysteriousness, OBOZ.UA managed to find out where she lives and how she feels. On the occasion of her birthday, we will tell you how Sofia Rotaru lives in a full-scale war, what she told her friends, and how the occupiers are taking revenge on the star for her pro-Ukrainian position.

Where is Sofia Rotaru now

In 2022, on her birthday, the singer showed her last fresh photo, in which she posed in the village of Marshyntsi, Chernivtsi region. However, this is not where the artist lives. According to her sister, the celebrity stayed in Piatykhatky.

"Sonia is near Kyiv, in her house, as usual. Her son Ruslan is with her. It was the same before – they all live there together, as in previous years," Aurika Rotaru told OBOZ.UA.

Although Russians have been spreading fake news about Sofia Rotaru's allegedly serious illness for three years now, her family denies this information. Aurika Rotaru assured us that the singer is healthy and doing well.

What stars, family, and friends say about Sofia Rotaru

The national legend of Ukraine rarely communicates with her followers, but her friends tell us something about the singer's life. For example, Andrii Danylko recently shared that Sofia Rotaru first called him on the night of New Year's Eve 2023. She was going down to the shelter during the Russian shelling.

Another star who spoke to Rotaru after the invasion of the Kyiv region by the occupiers was Latvian singer Laima Vaikule.

"She was in Kyiv when the bombing started. She said: "I don't know how I survived that moment, how I farted that night. I had no medicine. I ran to the bomb shelter". I know this about Sofia," Vaikule recalled.

An insider close to Rotaru's entourage told our editorial board that she tries not to contact people or minimize live communication. The reason is the fear of contracting the coronavirus again. Rumor has it that the singer had a very difficult time with Omicron, a type of COVID-19 that scientists discovered in early 2022.

There were other rumors about the artist, but they were already spread by Russians. For example, producer Serhii Lavrov, who has organized Sofia Rotaru's concerts in Russia in the past, said that "his phone was cut off." Allegedly, wealthy Russians are eager to book the star for non-New Year's corporate events and are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for private concerts, but she has rejected all offers.

Revenge of the Russians

Although the singer does not appear in the media, she has made it clear that she supports Ukraine. Rotaru thanks the Armed Forces, and air defense forces, and speaks briefly about Russian terrorism. For this, she was angry with Russia.

The only lever of influence that warms the occupiers' hearts is the eponymous hotel of Sofia Rotaru in Yalta. The "ghost house", as the locals call it, has long been in the eye of the Russians.

They demand that the property be "nationalized" in favor of the occupiers, turned into a hospital or a boarding house for terrorists, sold, etc. This issue is currently up in the air.
