She dreamed of being a lawyer and became Karl Lagerfeld's muse. What does 54-year-old Claudia Schiffer look like now

Claudia Schiffer turns 54

German supermodel of the 90s Claudia Schiffer has become a symbol of a fashion era that still inspires admiration. On August 25, the beauty celebrates her sweet 54th birthday and still remains a shining gem for style connoisseurs.

Unlike her colleagues like Kate Moss, Schiffer has never made headlines for her antics. "I've never had a desire to be in the spotlight," she admitted to ELLE magazine in 2017. Schiffer has always been considered diligent, disciplined and free from scandals, DW writes. "Over the past 30 years, I have had a reputation as a kind of 'Ice Queen,'" the model said about her 30-year career in her autobiographical book.

She was spotted at a disco

Representatives of a modeling agency spotted the 17-year-old on the dance floor of a disco in Düsseldorf. At the time, she aspired to follow in her father's footsteps and become a lawyer. But the shy girl from Rheinberg, a northwestern German town, soon became a star. Her blond locks and legendary pouty nose were featured in advertisements for fashion, cosmetics, and automotive brands around the world.

In addition to catwalk walks for the haute couture brand Chanel and modeling for companies such as Mango and Accessorize, Schiffer's face soon graced the front pages of more than a thousand magazines. It was a lucrative career: today, the supermodel's net worth is estimated at around 200 million euros.

Karl Lagerfeld's muse

In 1989, German photographer Ellen von Unwerth photographed Claudia Schiffer in a legendary shoot for the German magazine ELLE, describing the 19-year-old model as "a girl with a stunning smile" and comparing her to Brigitte Bardot.

Her resemblance to Bardot meant that Schiffer was particularly well received in Paris. Already in 1988, designer Karl Lagerfeld signed her to a contract with Chanel, helping La Schiffer become the highest-paid model in the world. "I will be forever grateful to him," she wrote after the designer's death in 2019, adding that he taught her about fashion, style, and how to survive in the fashion industry.

Soon, Schiffer's career went beyond catwalks and modeling, becoming her own brand. Star designers Dolce and Gabbana wrote about Claudia: "Her perfect beauty struck us from the very beginning: luxurious, shining golden curls, eyes as blue as the Sicilian waters, a physique reminiscent of ancient statues of goddesses."

Quiet life in an English town

Schiffer retired from the catwalks when she was in her 20s. In 2018, she reappeared at Donatella Versace's show alongside 90s supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Carla Bruni and Helena Christensen. But the famous model still graces the covers and continues to be the face of major brands.

Today, Claudia lives with her husband, film producer and director Matthew Vaughan, and their three children in the countryside in Oxfordshire, about 100 kilometers from London.
