At the end of last year, the star believed that she could survive for another 3-5 years if she continued to receive treatment. This was her plan to get rid of the shackles of cancer. She equated her "waiting time" with horse racing, where you can use one treatment to wait for another. Shannen dreamed that in this way she would be able to "reach" the creation of a cure that would rid her of the disease.

"I always say it's important to think of each therapy as a horse. In a horse race, you want to ride each horse as long as it's going, and then you ride the next one as long as you can... you hope you get a few laps in and then another new pair of horses comes along and that makes the race much longer," she believed.

In April 2024, the actress said that she had already begun preparing for her death. By doing so, she tried to make her mother Rosie Elizabeth's life easier in the future. Doherty began to carefully sort through her belongings at home to leave behind the most valuable things after her death. She threw some of them in the trash, gave others to other people, and put some of them up for sale. Doherty noted that her mother was her priority, so it was important for her not to burden the destitute woman with additional work in sorting through her home.

"My priority at this time is my mom. I know it will be hard for her if I die before her. So I've made it so that she doesn't have to worry about other things," Doherty said in her podcast.
