Poles quarreled over a song with a Ukrainian dialect at the National Selection for Eurovision 2025, but it still became a hit

The song Lusterka, with which the Polish duo Sw@da x Niczos submitted to the National Selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, provoked a wave of online quarrels. The fact is that when writing the song, the artists used a rather uncommon regional language, the Podlasie dialect, which is a Ukrainian dialect.

Some netizens argue that this is one of the Polish dialects, while others claim that they are residents of Podlasie and no one speaks this way in this area. However, despite the controversy, Lusterka has already become a real hit, as the band's YouTube channel has received almost 165 thousand views in the few days since its release.

One of the users of the social network X posted a post with the track on his account, saying: "The song at the Polish National Selection for Eurovision is in Podlasie. It is spoken by residents of the southern part of Podlasie. It can be classified as a Ukrainian or Belarusian dialect. Lusterka performed by Sw@da and Niczos is an absolute hit."

This publication caused a rather mixed reaction. A small number of people noted that this dialect is a Polish dialect.

"This is neither a Ukrainian dialect nor a Belarusian one. It is Polish, combining words from Poland and neighboring countries."

"In fact, it is a separate language, it was even once officially recognized in Poland, but recently, unfortunately, it has been ignored and called a dialect."

"This is not something Ukrainian or Belarusian, but a so-called 'local language'. "Tutejszy is a Polish microlanguage."

However, according to the residents of Podlasie, they have never heard such a dialect in their lives.

"What is this? I'm a resident of Podlasie who lived near the border with Belarus as a child. This is the first time I've ever heard it. Is it Belarusian or Ukrainian? Don't tell me it's my dialect."

"Is this the language of Podlasie? I have half of my relatives from there, but I have never heard such gibberish in my life."

"I used to live in that neighborhood. This is complete nonsense."

The Podlasie dialect is one of the dialects of the Ukrainian language, the name of which comes from the phrase "under the lachs," i.e. near the Poles. The dialects are widespread in the east of modern Poland, and in some places they can be found in Volyn and Beresteishchyna region.

The members of the duo are natives of Podlasie, so they have always wanted to popularize the culture of their region not only in Poland but throughout Europe. That's why Sw@da x Niczos decided to compete for the opportunity to represent their country on the international stage with the track Lusterka.

"This is a story about an inner critic. It's about how we gradually "milk" ourselves in different situations. In fact, we are the biggest critics of ourselves, not the people around us," the artists commented on the meaning of the song.
