She started dating Oliver Smith, a member of the male band 5Forward, who was incredibly popular among the audience but was secretly struggling with alcohol addiction and psychological problems. In one of the episodes, the fictional artist threatened his chosen one that he would commit suicide by jumping off the balcony. The blogger has never said whether Liam Payne was the prototype of the main character, but she noted: "What I went through in real life is very similar to what Mallory went through in the book."

After the novel was published, the girl spoke publicly for the first time about her relationship with the deceased One Direction member. She admitted that after the breakup, Payne had been stalking her for a long time, writing messages and calling her from different numbers. During the relationship, the musician repeatedly threatened Maya Henry with suicide, which, according to the model, was his "manipulative tactic," just like the main character in "Looking Forward." Later, it was reported that the singer's ex-girlfriend had launched a lawsuit against him to stop the artist's annoying attempts to contact her or her family.

The publication of the novel, which was based on Maya Henry's diary, and an unexpected statement about what Payne was really like in his relationship with the model, caused a wave of negative reactions from fans of the singer's work.
