Kate Middleton and Prince William show new Christmas card with three children: why Louis is wearing shorts and George is wearing pants

Kate Middleton and Prince William showed a new Christmas card

On Christmas Day, December 25, Kate Middleton and Prince William released a new holiday card. This time, only the children of the Dukes of Wales, 10-year-old Prince George, 8-year-old Princess Charlotte, and five-year-old Prince Louis, posed for the photo. Fans of the royal family were delighted with the cute and stylish black-and-white shot.

This photo, as well as the previous official Christmas card of the family, was taken by Josh Shinner, a photographer from Yorkshire, England. The image was posted on the Instagram page of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The portrait of the heirs to Prince William and his wife Catherine was taken in a studio. The children are sitting on a wooden bench, holding each other's shoulders and smiling sincerely. They are all wearing white long-sleeved shirts. The beautiful Charlotte is wearing dark jeans, the reserved George is wearing black pants, and the audience favorite Louis is wearing shorts.

"We wish you all a Merry Christmas, from our family to yours!" the future king and queen signed the picture laconically and warmly.

Meanwhile, fans melted over the card and left comments below the post, "Ooooh, that's so sweet", "This photo made me smile so hard, Merry Christmas to you all", "William and Kate's three best gifts", "Merry Christmas to the family who are the future of our monarchy", "Incredibly beautiful children", "What a beautiful family you have. Thank you for everything you do for the country."

Some also drew attention to the fact that Prince Louis is wearing shorts in the photo, while Prince George is wearing pants. They noted that this is mostly how the boys appear in public. The users wondered why the little princes were dressed this way and why Louis could be seen wearing shorts even in the chilly December.

It turns out that this tradition goes back centuries. Etiquette expert William Hanson previously told Harper's Bazaar that royal boys usually wear shorts to formal events until their eighth birthday.

He explained, "Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on little boys are one of those silent class markers we have in England. Although times are changing, a pair of pants on a little boy is considered a sign of middle class, quite provincial. And no self-respecting aristocrat or member of the royal family would want to be considered a provincial."
