Jared Leto turns 53: how the Russians use the Thirty Seconds to Mars singer for propaganda and what he really said about Russia and Ukraine

What Jared Leto really said about Russia and Ukraine

Today, on December 26, American actor and musician Jared Leto turned 53. Throughout his long career, the artist has won an Oscar and managed to win the favor of audiences around the world, but after the outbreak of the great war, Ukrainians had rather mixed feelings about the performer.

The fact is that the celebrity demonstrated somewhat contradictory political views, as after February 24, 2022, he spoke in support of our homeland, and later expressed his desire to come to Russia with a concert. OBOZ.UA will tell you what the star said about Ukraine and the aggressor country and how the Russians use the Thirty Seconds to Mars leader for propaganda.

Support for Ukraine

After the outbreak of a full-scale war, Jared Leto did not stay away from the bloody events taking place in Ukraine. The celebrity was already somewhat familiar with our country, as in 2005 he played an Odessan in the movie The Gun Baron.

This experience probably stuck in the artist's memory, because after February 24, 2022, he went on air and sang the song "Ah, Odesa, a pearl by the sea," which he dedicated to Ukraine and Ukrainians. In addition, he talked to the people of our country and admitted that he wanted to come to the capital.

What the star said about Russia

However, it seems that in 2024, Jared Leto's views have changed somewhat. During a concert with the alternative rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars in Serbia, he spoke about his love for Russians. Moreover, he said that he wanted to tour several large cities in Russia and perform in Kyiv.

"You missed us! I felt a lot of Russian energy around me. And here's what I'll tell you: one day, when all these problems are over, we will meet you in your homeland. We'll come back to Serbia, we'll go to St. Petersburg, Moscow, we'll stop by Kyiv. We will hang out and have fun. This is how it should be," Leto said.

The artist called the bloody war that is taking place on the territory of Ukraine "problems". These words caused outrage among both Ukrainians and the band's fans, who flooded him with ironic comments on social media.

The Russians, on the other hand, took Jared Leto's words too seriously. The propaganda media turned to the star's team to find out how much his concert would cost. It turned out that the performer had rather immodest demands. His performance would cost at least $1 million, and the Russians would have to provide the celebrity with a personal chef, a hotel with a presidential suite, security, and arrival the day before the concert.

Later, the propagandists decided to launch a fake about the Thirty Seconds to Mars leader. A video was posted on the Russian Internet showing Jared Leto allegedly supporting Russian residents at his concert in Dubai. A Russian woman living in the United Arab Emirates showed a two-part recording, to which she added subtitles to allegedly explain what the artist was saying. The star's speech reads as follows: "I'm not going to say too much because I don't want to get into trouble. I also love you. You know, I promise you one thing, I will definitely never forget this moment."

In the subtitles, the author of the recording noted that everyone in the audience, especially Russians, understood that the artist was referring to the "problems" that occurred after he confessed his love for the terrorist nation and attempted to cancel several concerts in Russia. However, if you listen to the video without text accompaniment, it is difficult to understand what exactly Jared Leto is talking about. The fact is that the UAE is a country with very strict laws, where it is dangerous to say anything unnecessary (the same applies to topics of gender, especially war). Therefore, the statement about "love" could apply to the entire audience, not just to residents from Russia.
