He was considered a playboy and accused of treason: what is known about the new King of Denmark, Frederik X, whose mother abdicated the throne. Photo

Frederick X became the new king of Denmark

On January 14, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark officially abdicated after her 52-year reign, and her son Frederik H. became the country's new king. He was proclaimed king from the balcony of the Christianshavn Palace. Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Copenhagen to say goodbye to Margrethe II and welcome the new sovereign.

Margrethe II became the first queen of Denmark to abdicate in almost 900 years. She cited her health problems as the reason for her decision, but there were many rumors among the people that her health had nothing to do with it, and that the "real" reason might be to "save her son's marriage." Not so long ago, Frederick was accused of cheating with a Mexican socialite and model. OBOZ.UA will tell you what is known about this incident, as well as other interesting facts from the life of the new king of Denmark.

Frederik was born on May 26, 1968. He is the great-great-grandson of the British Queen Victoria on his mother's side.

He studied at Harvard University and received his PhD in political science in 1995. At the same time, he also interned at the Danish Mission to the United Nations in New York and was First Secretary of the Danish Embassy in Paris.

In his youth, Frederick was considered a real playboy. He was popular with girls and gladly accepted their attention. The future king always took care of his appearance, so he was actively involved in sports, including running and skiing. He still participates in various marathons and was a member of the Sirius 2000 polar expedition.

Frederick met his wife Mary, who became Queen Consort on January 14, at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Mary Elizabeth Donaldson is an Australian whose parents emigrated from Scotland five years before she was born. She studied commerce and law, and worked in an advertising agency as a marketer and PR specialist.

It's interesting that the future spouses met in a bar. Mary started talking to a handsome guy and only later learned that he was the son of the Queen of Denmark. This May, the couple will celebrate 20 years of marriage.

The newly minted King and Queen of Denmark have four children: Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, who celebrated their 13th birthday on January 8.

The family's seemingly idyllic life almost collapsed at the end of 2023. In November, rumors circulated that Frederic had betrayed his lover and the mother of his four children. Behind the "adultery" scandal was a walk in Spain with model Genevieve Kazanova. The paparazzi quickly concluded that it was a date and made their readers believe it.

Later it turned out that Frederick and the model, presenter, and socialite visited the Picasso exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, took a walk in the park, and had dinner together in the city center. Genevieve immediately began to deny all the rumors, but the royal court did not comment on the sensational accusations.

In the end, the rumors remained rumors, although many royal experts, including Phil Dampierre, found it suspicious that almost immediately after the incident Margrethe II announced her intention to abdicate.

"It seems like an extraordinary coincidence that she made this unexpected announcement just a few months after rumors surfaced that the crown prince was allegedly having an affair. The Queen may think that they will settle their differences and this will save their marriage," Dampierre shared his thoughts with Express.
