British actor Ian Gelder, who ended his half-century career starring in the hit TV series Game of Thrones as Kevan Lannister, passed away on May 7. He was 74 years old.

The death was announced by the celebrity's husband, actor Ben Daniels, on his Instagram page. In December 2023, Gelder was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. The star's agent, Daniel Albert, also confirmed the terrible news.

During his 50-year career in television, film and theater, Gelder starred in the popular British science fiction show Doctor Who, as well as in the television adaptation of Dark Matter, based on Philip Pullman's trilogy of science fiction novels, the New York Times reports.

He has appeared in 12 episodes of Game of Thrones as Kevan Lannister, starting in the first season when his character was a military advisor to his older brother Tywin when Lannisters were at odds with Starks. Ian returned to the role in the fifth season, entering the power struggle that resulted from Tywin's death. Kevan Lannister was killed off at the end of the sixth season, along with many other characters.

Ian Gelder was born on June 3, 1949. The actor began his career with television shows back in the 1970s, including New Scotland Yard and Edward the King. He has also appeared in theater productions such as Gods and Monsters and Titus Andronicus at the Globe Theater in London. He began dating Ben Daniels in 1993 when they were both cast in the play Entertaining Mr. Sloane.
