Friends star Teri Garr, who was nominated for an Oscar, has died
American actress Teri Garr, star of the cult TV series Friends and the movie comedy Tootsie, has died at the age of 79. The Oscar nominee passed away on October 29, surrounded by family and friends.
The death of the actress was confirmed by publicist Heidi Schaeffer, The Guardian reports. The celebrity's life was cut short due to a disease of the central nervous system - multiple sclerosis, which she had been fighting for many years.
Recently, Teri Garr had to face serious health problems. In 2007, the celebrity underwent a complicated surgery because she suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm.
The actress was born on December 11, 1944 in Ohio (USA). Teri Garr began her career at a fairly young age, although she was not able to hit the big screen right away. In the 1960s, the celebrity appeared as a dancer in various genre films and variety shows. At that time, the actress was often cast as an extra, which caused her great irritation.
"I always resented the fact that I was an 'extra' because in those days, to work on musicals, you had to study for 10 years to be a dancer. And when you finally became a dancer in a movie, you were written down as an extra," the star said in an interview.
In 1968, Teri Garr managed to get her first speaking role in the movie "The Head", after which her acting career began to develop rapidly. The American celebrity was invited to take part in popular films, including: "The Conversation", "Young Frankenstein", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and others.
One of the most prominent roles of the actress was Sandy Lester in the movie comedy Tootsie, which brought the celebrity an Oscar nomination. In the 1990s, Teri Garr's famous films were released worldwide, including Dumb and Dumber and Friends, where she played Phoebe's mother.
