However, already during the opening ceremony, the singer surprised the audience with a controversial act. He showed the camera his middle finger, which was seen by millions of viewers.

Opinions were divided as for how to treat this gesture: some thought that the this meant disdain for Russians, Robbie's girlfriend suggested that the singer was "addressing" haters, and the Daily Mail wrote that the middle finger was "an answer to Putin's pompous circus."

Around the same time, the artist announced that he might have had a serious illness. He assumed that he suffered from Asperger's syndrome or autism because he was experiencing memory problems.
