Music producer Dario G, whose hits included Sunchyme and Carnaval de Paris, has died at the age of 53. The musician, whose real name was Paul Spencer, was diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer last year.

"He was optimistic until the end, but it was a battle he could no longer fight," the star's family wrote on his official Instagram page. Dario G was originally a duo formed by Paul and Scott Rosser when they met while studying music in Manchester in the 1990s.

After graduation, they set up a small studio at Paul's home in Cheshire and later invited a third member, Steven Spencer, to join them. In 1997, they recorded the hit song Sunchyme, which was based on the Dream Academy song Life In A Northern Town. It sold more than 600 thousand copies in the UK, and the first place was held only by Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana "Candle In The Wind".

Other hits included Sunmachine, Voices, and Dream to Me, which sampled the chorus of Cranberries' Dreams. Scott and Steven subsequently left the band, and Paul continued to perform as a solo project.

In June last year, Paul announced his cancer diagnosis, telling fans he would "do everything I can" and urging them to "stay positive." Over the following months, he spoke about his treatment on social media and released the song Savor the Miracle of Life to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In his last post, just three weeks ago, he was still optimistic. "I know you all have given me tremendous support, love and strength," he wrote. He was scheduled to play his first gig of the year at Chris Moyles' 90s Hangover concert in Swindon on May 25, but pulled out due to ill health.
