Safina Namukwaya from Uganda has become the oldest mother in Africa, giving birth to twins - a boy and a girl - at the age of 70. The babies were born by cesarean section at a fertility center in the capital Kampala on November 29.

After the operation, the mother told reporters that she considered her pregnancy a "miracle," and doctors said it was "not just a medical success but a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit." A video of the birth was posted on the International Women's Hospital and Fertility Center's Facebook page.

"The International Women's Hospital and Fertility Center sets an African record! This historic event - the birth of a boy and a girl - not only marks two decades of our leadership in IVF but also makes us the leading fertility treatment center in Africa," the post reads.

The mother and children were doing well after the birth. It is obvious that Safina Namukwaya became pregnant through IVF: she must have implanted a donor egg or her own, frozen in her youth.

The twins' father abandoned the children before they were born. According to the mother, he abandoned the pregnant woman when he found out that she was carrying two babies.

"Men don't like to be told that you are carrying more than one child. Since I was put here, my husband hasn't come home once," the new mother of twins said.

This is the second childbirth in her life, but the first one happened not so long ago. In 2020, a resident of Uganda gave birth to her first daughter.

When she was young, the woman discovered that she could not have children, facing mockery. However, she was able to afford to get pregnant artificially only three years ago.

"I looked after other people's children and saw them grow up and leave me alone. I was asking myself who would take care of me when I got old," 70-year-old Namukwaya said.
