The U.S. transferred a grant to the budget of Ukraine: the amount and what the money will be used for

Volodymyr PaziyBusiness
Ukraine received a $1.25 billion grant from the U.S.

The U.S. transferred $1.25 billion in grants to the state budget of Ukraine through the World Bank's Multi-donor Trust Fund. This year our state has already received $6 billion in direct budget support from the United States.

This was reported by the Ministry of Finance on May 31. The attracted funds will be used for reimbursement of budget expenditures:

  • for the payment of state social benefits to families with children;
  • the remuneration of workers in the educational sphere;
  • to pay for the labor of providers of medical services under the program of medical guarantees.

"Grant support from the United States through the World Bank's PEACE in Ukraine project is an important part of ensuring humanitarian and social spending during a full-scale war. The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, together with the World Bank and USAID SOERA teams, helps optimize and strengthen the Ukrainian government's systems for monitoring, verification, and reporting on the use of donor funds provided by partners," said Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko.

Earlier it became known that Ukraine received 1.5bn euros of budget assistance from the European Union (EU). The funds are part of the $18-billion package and have already entered Ukraine's government accounts. These funds can be spent to cover a hole in the budget, but not on military needs.

The transfer of funds was announced at a briefing in Brussels by Dana Spinant, a representative of the European Commission. "This aid will allow Ukraine to ensure macroeconomic stability and restore critical infrastructure destroyed by Russia during the war against Ukraine," Spinant said.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell proposed adding €3.5 billion to the fund used to finance military aid to Ukraine. The proposal needs the approval of the national governments of the EU.
