The root of Russia's aggression against Ukraine is not Ukraine's desire for freedom. The reason is Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin's thirst for power.

This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Strasbourg (France) at the plenary session of the European Parliament. The politician categorically disagrees that Ukraine is somehow to blame for the war, Ukrinform reports.

"The whole world has witnessed the atrocities of this Russian war. But there are still those who blame this war not on the invaders, but on those who were invaded. Not Putin with his thirst for power, but Ukraine's desire for freedom. So I want to ask them: would they have blamed the Hungarians for the Soviet invasion of 1956? Could they somehow blame the Czechs and Slovaks for the Soviet repressions of 1968? (These words were interrupted by applause. – Ed.). Or could they accuse Lithuanians of the Soviet offensive in 1991?

We Europeans may have different histories and different languages, but there is no European language in which peace is synonymous with surrender, where sovereignty is synonymous with occupation," von der Leyen emphasized.

The people who are now defending Ukraine are fighting for freedom, just like the heroes who liberated Central and Eastern Europe from Soviet rule.

The EC President stated that there is only one way to a just peace for Ukraine and Europe – "to continue to fuel the Ukrainian resistance with political, financial and military assistance." Ursula von der Leyen promised our country further support.
