United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made embarrassing attempts to justify his trip to the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. He also issued an explanation for his meeting with war criminal Vladimir Putin, whose arrest warrant was issued by no other than the International Criminal Court itself.

According to Guterres, during the trip, he called on the Russian dictator to bring 'a just peace' to Ukraine and talked to him about the need to ensure 'safe navigation in the Black Sea.' The UN Secretary-General wrote about this on his official X page.

"I’m on my way back from Kazan, where I once again attended the Outreach session of the Summit of BRICS that represents nearly half of the world’s population. In the session, I called for a just peace in Ukraine in line with the @UN Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions. I emphasized that everywhere, we must uphold the values of the UN Charter, the rule of law, and the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of States," Guterres said in a statement.

He also said that he "met with several Heads of State & Government." That includes the wanted criminal Putin, but Guterres referred to the dictator as "President."

"In my meeting with President Putin, I stressed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was in violation of the UN Charter & international law, and I reiterated the points I made in the Summit session. I also emphasized my strong support for the establishment of an agreement for safe navigation in the Black Sea, an essential avenue for global food security," the UN Secretary-General said.

Most commentators did not appreciate Guterres' justification. Many of them posted a photo of Putin and Guterres, in which the latter eagerly shakes hands with the war criminal, bowing slightly.

X users also posted poignant collages that emphasize the absurdity of the UN Secretary-General's "visit" to the aggressor state and his attempts to suck up to the dictator who unleashed the bloodiest war in Europe since World War II.

Guterres was not embarrassed by the fact that he had come to a country that was committing war crimes, including the murder of unarmed prisoners.

The day before, on October 25, it became known that Zelenskyy refused to invite the UN Secretary-General to Kyiv. Antonio Guterres was planning to come to Ukraine after a trip to Kazan, Russia.

It was also reported that even before the UN Secretary-General's trip to Russia, the organization tried to justify the visit, calling the UN chief's attendance at such international events "standard practice."
