A new military unit will appear in Poland on the border with Belarus

By the end of 2023, Poland will create a new military unit for a sapper battalion within the 15th Giżycki Mechanized Brigade of the 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division. The place of deployment will be the city of Augustow near the border with Belarus.
This was announced by Polish Minister of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak, reports Polskie Radio 24. The statement was made on July 23 against the background of deployment of Russian mercenaries from the PMC "Wagner" in neighboring Belarus.
The Polish Defense Ministry hopes that young residents of Augustów and its surroundings will join the ranks of the new battalion.
Its main task will be to strengthen the eastern border and the so-called Suwałki Corridor. This is the conventional territory around Suwalki, Augustov and Sein, which connects the Baltic States with Poland and other NATO states, as well as separates the territory of the Russian Kaliningrad region from Belarus.
The creation of the new military unit was planned back in 2022 as part of the Polish Council of Ministers' package for strengthening the country's armed forces for 2023-2025.
