Xi Jinping in Paris calls for "good ways" to solve the "Ukrainian crisis"
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said that Beijing, together with its partners, is allegedly looking for "good ways" to end the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he continued to call Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine the "Ukrainian crisis."
Xi Jinping wrote about this in a column for Le Figaro. It was published on Sunday, May 5, at the same time as the Chinese leader arrived in Paris as part of his European tour.
He said that Beijing "is not a participant or party to this crisis" and expressed hope that "peace and stability will return to Europe."
"We understand the turmoil that the 'Ukrainian crisis' is causing Europeans. China is not the source of this crisis and is neither a party nor a participant. We hope that peace and stability will quickly return to Europe, and we intend to work with France and the entire international community to find good solutions to the crisis," Le Figaro quoted Xi Jinping as saying.
The newspaper writes that Paris wants to at least ensure that China, the main ally of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, does not explicitly support his military actions against Kyiv or even "encourage him to use the leverage" it has over Moscow to "help resolve this conflict."
Earlier, Reuters also suggested that during his talks with Xi, French President Emmanuel Macron would try to persuade him to use his influence on the terrorist country Russia. Macron will also seek to ensure that China reduces its trade imbalances.
Xi Jinping is also expected to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The talks are likely to raise the issue of disagreements within the 27 EU members, including between France and Germany, which undermine their ability to influence China. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will not join Macron and Xi Jinping in Paris.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on May 5, President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan arrived in France on a visit. He intends to discuss with Macron, among other things, the war in Ukraine.
