AFU received AUDS anti-drone systems: how they work

The Ukrainian military has received the AUDS system. They are designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles in the air.

This was reported by German journalist Julian Röpcke. He also showed footage of the use of this weapon.

AUDS is an innovative system that combines radar target detection with electronic scanning and RF suppression capabilities.

This advanced technology can effectively counter drones in the air and is applicable in both remote and urban areas. It effectively prevents drones from being used for terrorist attacks or reconnaissance.

Three UK companies, Blighter Surveillance Systems, Enterprise Control Systems and Chess Dynamics, have been involved in the development of the AUDS drone suppression system. The AUDS system is a robust defense tool capable of rapidly detecting and suppressing potentially dangerous UAVs, ensuring the safety and security of the public.

Three UK companies, Blighter Surveillance Systems, Enterprise Control Systems and Chess Dynamics, have been actively involved in the development of the AUDS drone suppression system.

The radar component of the AUDS system performs a scanning process to detect drone signals. Based on the data received, the system automatically activates a video camera equipped with thermal imaging sensors.

The thermal imaging sensors provide information on infrared radiation, allowing the drone to be monitored in different lighting conditions, including darkness. This greatly enhances the AUDS system's effectiveness in detecting and monitoring drones.

For example, in the case where the drone owner receives a signal that a malfunction has occurred, various scenarios are possible for the AUDS system operator.

The operator may decide to suppress the drone control signal for a short time. This can be useful if there is a need to temporarily stop or neutralize the UAV's actions to prevent misuse or eliminate a potential threat.

"It's all about the radio signal, because drone manufacturers use a limited range of frequencies. Our device uses a directional antenna to send a signal on those frequencies. The signal is so powerful that the drone stops hearing all other commands," a representative of Enterprise Control Systems says about the system.

The system passed UK government-funded trials in 2015 and was being prepared for mass production.

The system also includes a Blighter A400 radar to help recognize targets. According to the development company, AUDS can detect UAVs up to 10 kilometers away and is able to operate effectively in challenging environments, day and night in all weather.

The main characteristics of AUDS are:

  • detection range - 10 km;
  • minimum target size - 0.01 m²;
  • output power - 4 W;
  • azimuth coverage - 180° (standard) or 360° (optional);
  • elevation angle - 10° (M10S antennas) or 20° (W20S antennas);
  • height adjustment - -40° to +30°;
  • maximum camera speed - 60 degrees per second;
  • optical zoom - x30;
  • digital zoom - x12;
  • wavelength of the thermal imager - from 3 to 5 microns.

OBOZREVATEL reported that Norway will transfer another 1,000 Black Hornet-type microdrones to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. These are very small reconnaissance drones, some of the most advanced in the world, which allow you to observe the enemy not only from a camera, but also through thermal imaging.
