The Secretary-General ironically noted that when Russia launched its full-scale invasion, its army was considered the second strongest in the world, and "now the Russian army is the second strongest in Ukraine."
"The Ukrainians are gradually gaining strength, and this proves the importance of our support and our ability and willingness to continue that support... These are heavy battles, but Ukrainian Forces have managed to break through the defensive lines of the Russian forces, they are advancing," Stoltenberg emphasized.
At the same time, he recalled the mined territories, which make it difficult for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to advance. The NATO official noted that one cannot expect victories from the Ukrainian defenders on their own, because this is not the case in war. Partners should be with Ukraine not only in success but also in difficult times, Stoltenberg emphasized.
"The Ukrainians decided to launch an offensive because they are going to liberate their land, and they are making progress. Perhaps not as fast as we had hoped, but they are gradually making progress, about 100 meters a day.... It is unlikely that we will see only victories for the side we support. There will be bad days and good days. We must be with Ukraine not only in good times but also in bad times," the North Atlantic Alliance Secretary General emphasized.
