The Ukrainian weekly Military Courier has reproduced in detail the chronology of the AFU's multi-day operation to liberate Snake Island. The shocked occupants were forced to leave the island after heavy losses on June 30, 2022.

The video with the chronology of the liberation of the island was created within the framework of the project "Maps of War" with the support of the Center for research of military history of the AFU. According to the story, Snake Island, located 35 kilometers off the coast east of the Danube Delta and 120 kilometers from Odessa, is small in area, which does not allow for the deployment of a large number of military and weapons (the video is posted at the bottom of the news).

At the same time, the deployment of air defense systems, rocket artillery, electronic intelligence and radar warfare equipment on its territory makes it possible to control a significant part of the northwestern waters of the Black Sea.

At the time of the full-scale invasion, 80 servicemen were stationed on Snake. There were no air defense systems or coastal artillery on the island. The defenders had radar equipment and light weapons at their disposal.

On February 24, at 9 a.m., the Russian patrol ship Vasily Bykov approached Snake Island, later joined by the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser Moskva. The vessels opened fire on the defenders of the Snake Island, and enemy Su-27 and Su-34 fighter jets began dropping bombs. The air defense of the cruiser "Moskva" did not let the AFU aviation approach.

Having finished leveling the positions of the Ukrainian military to the ground, the enemy landed a paratrooper on Snake Island, thus capturing the island. The defenders of Snake Island were captured.

After capturing the island, the occupants began to turn it into a logistical base for landing operations in Odessa and Mykolayiv regions, placing there electronic intelligence and air defense units. However, all attempts by the aggressors were successfully repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"Having made the Russians' attempts to carry out a landing in Odessa and Mykolaiv regions impossible, the Ukrainian command began to develop a plan to liberate Snake Island. The main obstacle on the way to the de-occupation of the island was the missile cruiser "Moscow" - the basis of the system of Russian control over the northwestern waters of the Black Sea", - stated in the story.

On April 13, "Moscow" went down together with 360 occupants. This made it possible to proceed to the next stage of the operation. On April 26, the Ukrainian military destroyed the control center and SAM "Strela-10" by the strike of "Bayraktar", and on April 30, "Bayraktors" repeatedly worked on the island - the occupants lost three anti-aircraft installations "ZU-23-2", another SAM "Strela-10" and communication vehicles. Together with the equipment 42 invaders were killed.

And on May 2, after the raid of "Bayraktar", two enemy landing and assault ships "Raptor", which supplied resources to the invaders on Snake Island, went to the bottom.

The first attempt to de-occupy the island took place on May 7, 2022, but then it failed to completely suppress the enemy's air defense. On that day, two Ukrainian Su-27s operated against the occupants' positions on the island.

The next day, a landing operation began under the direction of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Directorate of Intelligence and with the participation of the SSU's special unit Alpha. Four Mi-8 and four Mi-24 helicopters flew out to destroy the enemy. On the water they were supported by three small artillery ships "Gyurza-M". Despite the losses inflicted on the enemy, the operation did not bring the expected results, so the AFU concentrated on methodical extermination of the occupants and their logistics with the help of "Bayraktars".

In the following days of May, the enemy lost the Serna boat together with Tor-M2 SAMs, two more Raptors, an Mi-8 helicopter together with a landing party, the Vsevolod Bobrov logistics vessel, the Vasily Bech Rescue and other equipment on the Snake Island.

Ukrainian artillery, including the only copy of the Ukrainian 155-mm 2S22 Bogdana SPA, the French CAESAR SPA, and Uragan and Verba MLRS launchers, which were moved to the closest point of the coast to the island, began to work on enemy targets.

"The operation to deploy the SPA in the Danube Delta plains was crucial in defeating the occupants on Snake Island. The Russian contingent was literally stunned by such a move by the AFU. On June 27, in the course of ten accurate artillery strikes, the occupants had to say goodbye to one Pantsir C1. The shelling had such a crushing result that for some reason the aggressor stopped approaching the island from the sea. On June 30, after a series of strikes, the arguments in favor of staying on the island of the Russian Federation ended, the remnants of the occupants gave a hoot from Snake Island," - said in the story.
