Sweden to train Ukrainian pilots on Jas 39 Gripen fighters: new assistance package announced

Sweden is allocating the twelfth package of military assistance to Ukraine, totalling SEK 230 million (over EUR 14 million), as announced at a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defence in Brussels on 15 June. The funds will be used to purchase and prepare military equipment for the Defence Forces.
This is stated in a press release from the Swedish Ministry of Defence.
In particular, the country's defence ministry also said that its Armed Forces will train Ukrainian pilots to fly Swedish fourth-generation JAS 39 Gripen multi-role fighters.
"The Armed Forces have been tasked with training Ukrainian pilots and associated aviation personnel on the JAS 39. The background is that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have expressed a desire to be able to quickly master the JAS 39 Gripen, as one of the most urgent measures is to strengthen Ukrainian air defence with modern combat aircraft.", the statement said.
The Swedish Armed Forces will also implement decisions on the supply of military equipment systems to Ukraine and the establishment of service centres.
The Swedish Ministry of Defence noted that since 2022, the country has supplied a large number of different types of equipment systems to Ukraine, while Swedish support for maintenance was limited to the preparation of equipment and its subsequent transportation to Ukraine. However, more sophisticated weapon systems require a long-term supply solution that includes system technical support, spare parts and replacement units, as well as ammunition to maintain operational effectiveness.
Thus, the armed forces intend to develop a long-term solution for the supply of qualified military equipment systems, such as Robotsystem 70, Stridsfordon 90, Stridsvagn 122 and Archer, transferred to Ukraine.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Sweden will set up logistics centres for the military equipment transferred to Ukraine, where it will be repaired and maintained. They will be located in one of Ukraine's neighbouring countries.
