World champion and multiple European swimming champion Mykhailo Romanchuk will not compete in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2024 Olympics, Suspilne Sport reports. The 27-year-old native of Rivne developed a high fever, which resulted in deteriorated physical condition the day before the start.

The winner of the silver medal in the 1500-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics withdrew from the second qualification and is leaving Paris.

Romanchuk is a European record holder in the 800-meter freestyle in 25-meter pools, as well as a national record holder in the 400, 800, and 1500-meter freestyle in 50-meter and 25-meter pools.

At the Tokyo Olympics, he set the Olympic record and the record of Ukraine. In 2018, he became the world champion in the 1500 meters, and in 2021, he won the European Championships in the same discipline.

All in all, Mykhailo has 4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals in this distance at various international tournaments (European Championships, World Cup, Olympics and Universidad).

As previously reported, Romanchuk, along with Elina Svitolina, were flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games.

In an interview with OBOZ.UA, Mykhailo admitted that he did not apply for the Paris open-water swimming events because he was worried about his health
