Ukrainian gymnast Ilya Kovtun has won a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, which are currently taking place in Paris. The 20-year-old native of Cherkasy took second place in the parallel bars competition.

Our compatriot opened the competition. He performed all of his elements perfectly, with only a small mistake on the landing. The judges gave the Ukrainian a score of 15.500 points.

Only the Chinese gymnast Zou Jinyuan managed to beat Kovtun. His performance was incredibly beautiful, complex and almost perfect. The athlete was seven tenths ahead of Ilya.

The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic champion Oleg Vernyaev finished the tournament in last place. He made a gross mistake in the middle of his program, flying off the uneven bars.

For Ukraine, this medal in gymnastics was the only one at the Paris Olympics. Prior to that, the blue and yellow team faced openly biased judging in the floor exercise.

Now the national team of our country has seven awards from the 2024 Games - two golds, two silvers and three bronzes. Ukraine remains in 17th place in the medal standings.
