Ukrainian gymnast Ilya Kovtun became the fourth in the individual all-around at the 2024 Olympics. Another Ukrainian, Oleg Verniaiev, took 8th place. Kovtun scored 86.165 points in the sum of all performances. Verniaiev got 84.399.

Japanese Shinnosuke Oko became the Olympic champion. The second and third places were shared by athletes from China: Boheng Zhang and Xiao Zhoten, respectively.

At the very beginning, the judges believed that Vernyaev had made a step during the landing after the vault and gave him a 0.1 point penalty.

Ukrainian coach Gennady Sartynsky did not protest, despite having the formal right to do so.

Verniayev's performance on the parallel bars was the best among all the participants at the time. Oleg got 15 points and took the intermediate first place.

The performance on the bar was not perfect, which ultimately cost the Ukrainian the gold medal.

The judges deducted points from the Ukrainian for correcting the pad, for not being too quick to reach the stance and for not having a very clean jump (12.700).

Kovtun's routine was close to perfect, but the judges, who were meticulous in their assessment of the Ukrainian, were able to find mistakes in the smallest details (13.800).

Kovtun performed the floor exercise perfectly, getting a 14.700.

20-year-old Kovtun was born in Cherkasy. Bronze medalist of the World and European Championships in the all-around. Winner of the World Junior Championships, six-time European Junior Champion, winner of the European Junior Championships, multiple champion and winner of the European Youth Olympic Festival. He is an Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine.

Verniaiev, 30, is from Donetsk. Olympic champion and silver medalist of the 2016 Olympic Games, 2014 world champion. Participant of the 2012 Olympic Games.
