The United States has authorized oil purchases from Russia: Ambassador explains why this does not violate sanctions

The United States personally approved India's purchase of Russian oil earlier in May. Washington believes that this does not contradict international sanctions and restrains the growth of the cost of raw materials.

This was stated by the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, explaining that in this way India is helping the US to keep world oil prices in check.

"India bought Russian oil because we wanted someone to buy it within the price limit. It was not a violation of sanctions, it was part of the policy because we did not want commodity prices to rise. And they did that," Garcetti said.

It is worth noting that under international restrictions, Russia can only purchase insurance for oil transportation services if its price does not exceed $60 per barrel. However, the aggressor country circumvents such measures by using a shadow fleet of tankers. Therefore, ships and companies that facilitate such a fleet are also subject to sanctions.

Despite this, oil sanctions are often criticized for their ineffectiveness. In response, the United States claims that Russia's oil export revenues have decreased by 30%. In addition, the Russian regime is spending additional funds to create a shadow fleet.

In addition, Garcetti noted that at the G20 summit in 2023, India helped the United States agree on a final statement with Russia, in which the G20 countries called for an end to military destruction and attacks on infrastructure, but did not call Russia's aggression the cause of these destructions. This caused disappointment for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
